It was so hard to struggle, when you saw the world coming crashing down around you, and were not able to do anything. Maya bit her lip, anger blazing in her eyes as she glared at a group of Slytherin boys lounging noisily by the lake, their laughter alien in the subdued air. They didn't seem to care what other people cared about. Maya tried to stay away from fellow Slytherins at times. Mostly because they hated her and she wasn't a normal Slytherin girl.
Maya was distracted from her musing as a screech tore through the air, and a little blue bird swapped its wing and took off from the tree she was sitting under. She was on her feet at once, her head turning sharply this way and that, searching for what had caused the commotion. But there was nothing to retaliate, no one to try her famous bat bogey hex on. It was only small huddle of Ravenclaws waddling in the water that had made the unseemly sound.
Rolling her shoulders back to relax her stance, Maya tried to take a deep breath to calm herself, though her heart was hammering rapidly in her chest. Almost always, she was constantly on the verge of doing something, anything. Befriending an enemy, like that would ever happen. Making a new friend, impossible. She didn't have any friends and she never would. Not as long as she was in Slytherin.
Maya suddenly realized how quiet it was. Sure, the voices in her head were loud enough, but the grounds seem oddly empty. She glanced around quickly, her eyes flicking left and right. She was only at the other side of the castle, hidden from the others by a large yew tree that grew immense in size. But Maya had the feeling she wasn't alone. Apart from the yew tree, a few other trees dotted where she was, and glancing around, she caught the sight of a robe.
"Who's there?" Maya asked at once, her voice flat and cold. Beneath her jacket, her hand closed over her wand.

(I hope it's okay if I join in. If not, no worries. I'll be happy to delete. =3)
"Calm down, lassie. I'm not here to cause any trouble."
A tall young man clothed in odd, black and red robes stepped out of the shadow of the tree he was behind. Truth be told, he'd only been glancing around out of curiosity, not with any voyeuristic intentions concerning Maya.
Of course, being who he was, Lucien figured that it would not be perceived that way anyhow. After all, he was a bloodsucking heathen in the eyes of most wizards, particularly the pureblooded, conceited families such as the Malfoys or what have you. The death of He Who Must Not Be Named did not bring the death of discrimination. It merely silenced most things. But never would wizards accept Lucien as an equal.
Well, not till he changed it.
"What's got you on edge anyway?" the young Ravenclaw asked, brushing long strands of vibrant red hair away from his face as he adjusted his cloak. He then considered his words, and bowed slightly in apology. "Forgive me, that was rude."

That's what they all say. Maya looked at the boy in the eyes. They were dark. But not untrustworthy. She shifted her weight to her right. This boy was new to her. Many people were though. He was a Ravenclaw. So most likely smart. But Maya was still a bit nervous. He seemed kind enough. The least she could do was be kind to. He was two years younger then her by the looks of it. Perhaps fourteen, fifteen?
As much as Maya wanted to trust this boy, she knew she couldn't. She was always betrayed and her family would beat her if she did become friends with him. Not that she cared much but it always hurt and kids would start to notice at school. She didn't always like being the center of attention. She still had the bruises from where her brother had hit her just yesterday. Her sister luckily hadn't been there otherwise Maya wouldn't even be outside. She was beginning to recover from her brother's vile beating which was a bit unusual because it at least took 3 days till she could come out and talk freely with other students.
She touched a scar on her hand that she had just gotten from her brother. It felt like a burn at every touch, it felt worse then pain it was horrible. Terrible. It was worse then some of the others but still smaller. She quickly hid it so he wouldn't see it and ask. She hated people asking questions about her cuts and bruises. She wanted to talk about it with someone, but if she told her brother and sister would beat her harder then they ever had, if it was possible.
"No...it's...fine." said Maya she looked at the black lake. it had never seemed black to her but she guessed it had it's reasons for being called such a name. Maya looked back at the boy. Not unwillingly. She was still a bit nervous.

Lucien raised an eyebrow. His keen vampire eyes were not to be fooled by this girl's movements. She had obviously been trying to hide something, and by the look of what she'd touched, it was a scar. And...were those bruises?
Mm...but s'prolly best not t'ask her, he thought to himself, judging her answer back to him. It was hesitant, frightened almost...
Well, perhaps a nice introduction would distract her from whatever her troubles were.
"Well, my name's Lucien. Lucien Iyesterius," he said in his cheery, Scottish tone, holding a hand out. "It's nice t'meet you, though next time I'll try not to be such a threat."

"I'm Maya...Maya Powers." said she, "It's ok...I'm not usually like this." Maya finished shaking Lucien's hand. Her hair falling over her shoulder but she ignored it. She withdrew her hand and placed it in her pocket. Maybe that was to much to say. But she did feel like being questioned. But she knew that she would pay for giving anything away at all at any time. It was difficult. Maya looked around at students. they didn't seem to find it odd that a Slytherin girl was talking to a Ravenclaw boy maybe about two years younger then her. But Maya didn't always care what others thought.
Maya still was a bit frightened. But she knew she would soon get over it. But it would be quicker then it usually has been before. Maya looked at Lucien. But knowing Lucien's name maybe helped things a little better. Maya smiled hesitantly at him then looked at the green grass. It wasn't a different color at Hogwarts normally. Maybe everything that had a color marked the four houses at Hogwarts. Most likely not though...there weren't but two colors for each Hogwarts house.

"Nah, I understand," Lucien said, nodding. "Must be strange, talkin' to a Ravenclaw when I c'n see you're a Slytherin. But all this House rivalry needn't be negative, I say."
Now that was really too much to be getting on about, but Lucien tended to ramble when given half a chance. He liked to talk.
The only problem was that he also liked to smile, which he was doing now...and that revealed his lengthy fangs. That was usually never a good thing. No matter what house one was in, a vampire was just a complete turnoff, and he didn't hide it.

"I don't like it either. But my brother and sister would kill me if they saw me talking to anyone from Gryffindor." She meant it. They would kill her. Literally. "It's rather annoying to." said Maya looking down again. Maya wasn't usually one for talking. But she would talk if needed to. But now she was talking toi Lucien and it wouldn't be fair if she didn't talk at all. So she was talking. Her last words were the most she had said in the whole conversation. it wasn't horrible for her to really be seen talking to a different house member if a Slytherin wasn't around. But if one was they would probably talk to another Slytherin and it would eventually reach her sibling's ears.
Maya looked down. Her eyes searching the grass for an ant but instead she saw a lady bug. She ignored it and continued looking at the grass. A faint ready mode. But she never fainted. Never. She just felt as if she would faint at times. it was weird. But this one was a bit different. Maya held her forehead. She knew she wasn't going to faint but maybe she just had a head ace. She knew she would be okay.

The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and the sky bearing that shining sun and those singing birds was as clear and as blue as the ocean with not a cloud in sight (for it's rare you see an ocean with clouds.) It was the absolute picture perfect day... for some anyways. While there were most people who would take advantage of this picture perfect day by going outside for a swim in the lake, or a game of quidditch, there were always the odd few who liked to admire the day from inside while in the library reading a text book. This was most common for Ravenclaws, but not so much for Vertigo who saw this as the most perfectest day in the world to just relax and take a nice walk.
Ok. Not true. Sure, Vertigo was all over taking a walk. She didn't mind the outdoors so much and on such a picture perfect day why not take a walk? For this young Ravenclaw gurl the answer was simple: YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE IN CLASS DUMBASS. Now, as I'm sure we all know, Ravenclaws aren't exactly well known for skipping (or failing in charms for that matter, but that's a whole other story.) No, Ravenclaws are the smart ones, the over achievers, the bookworms and most commonly unknown as the group of students who do not skip classes to take nice walks on the most picture perfectest days.
Surprisingly enough Vertigo had all of these qualities + one: Vertigo was also adventurous, a word here meaning: not skipping classes but occasionally taking the time during classes to step out to chase after the one that got away. See, Vertigo had never skipped a class. She'd been thrown out of classes, sent out to fetch things, and today she'd merely stepped out of one of her classes (for only a moment she hoped) to get something that she hoped would be the something that would not get her kicked out of class. Again.
Currently Vertigo was supposed to be in her care of magical creatures class, more commonly known as comc class. She was just sitting there minding her own busness when... ok she was actually sitting there messing around with one of the birds they were supposed to be feeding when all of a sudden it jumped out of her hands and flew away... well sort of. In a nutshell she lost the bird and now she was wandering the grounds when she was supposed to be in class hoping to find the bird so that she wouldn't get thrown out of class. Did that sound stupid to you too?
But hey, there she was. Just wandering the grounds, moving as fast as she could, but of course, being slowed down by her godforsaken leg braces, which, along with the constant pain in her joints, slowed her frantic search for the bird, into a walk that occasionally entailed calling the bird's name (or what she assumed to be it's name) or whistling in attempt to mimik it's cries (which wasn't exactly working since Vertigo sucked at whistling.) Little did she know that she was the one who'd caused the disturbance in the tree above the slytherin gurl who was now talking to one of Vertigo's house mates.
As Verigo, sporting all her Ravenclaw glory, the robe, the untied tie and all, approached the two by the tree she didn't realize that just moments before her little blue bird had flown out of that exact tree. What she also didn't know is whether or not anyone had noticed. So she continued to call the name she'd named the bird: birdy, until he reached the two by the tree.
"Excuse me" she called to the two, jogging over - or rather, waddling over as fast as she could. The metal of her braces clinked with every step she took. "Excuse me, has anyone seen a little blue -" Vertigo stopped. Something about the pair made her heart sink. The one gurl had her head hung and it was normal for Vertigo to point out absolutely everything that was on her mind. "Hey, is this the wrong time? You look like you're about to pass out." She turned to the boy, realizing that she hadn't greeted them, but found herself unable to say anything besides that the guy looked slightly... off,in a way she couldn't describe. "An you... hi."

"Well that's a shame," Lucien commented, frowning. Inter-House relationships shouldn't be so bad...why did schools have to be so competitive? Not that he had gone to many schools so as to be able to judge clearly, but honestly...
Needless to say, he thought that she was kind of being sarcastic about that whole "My siblings will kill me" thing.
Surprisingly enough, he turned to hear a strange clatter as a fellow Ravenclaw walked up. He hadn't expected anyone, but he was familiar with this girl. Vertigo was a strange one, to be sure, but only as strange as he, and she was still human at least.
Anyway, he didn't know her well, not even as an acquaintance. More like a passerby, so...it didn't surprise him that she was uncertain around him. He had an unnatural feel. Kind of like being next to an Animagus. It behaved differently than an animal, or gave some sort of indication that it was more than it seemed...
Turning his attention back to Maya, he appeared concerned.
"D'you need to sit down?" he asked worriedly.

Maya looked up at the two. "What? Oh no I'm fine." said Maya taking her hand off her forehead and placing it on her arm above her elbow. She smiled at them to show the truth. even if her head still hurt slightly. But it soon passed. She turned to the new Ravenclaw that had joined them. "I'm Maya and this is Lucien. Um...what were you about to say?" she half asked half introduced herself if that was even possible. Maya smiled. She didn't know why she just did. Like when you don't know why you passed your test when you didn't spend anytime studying. Or maybe that wasn't the best example.
Maya looked at the new girl. She seemed familiar but younger then Maya. Maybe fourteen thirteen. Now she was guessing like how she did with Lucien's age. Well life isn't anything if you don't have a few questions. That was Maya's own line that she used because she once got in trouble with a teacher for asking questions in her first year. Maya had gotten mad because it was a simple question about the rules. Whether the teacher was mad about Maya questioning the rules or bringing up a different subject then the on they were doing in class Maya didn't know. But she didn't really care as long as she annoyed the teacher.

Lucien blinked. He wasn't so sure about this girl Maya being alright. She seemed as if she were about to faint.
Disgustingly enough, that aroused Lucien's instinct to feed, if only slightly. He hated the feeling of necessity, and for a moment, he resented Maya for being a vulnerable human, at least until he was able to control his emotions and inner devils.
